Robert is commissioned to assist in the investigation of a murder. Respected physicist Leonardo Vetra, is found dead with an Illuminti occult ambigram branded to his chest. At the murder scene Langdon discover evidence that of a secret society, originally thought to be extinct.

Vetra’s daughter arrives at the scene. It is then discovered that a canister container a quarter gram of antimatter has been stolen. Antimatter is the centerpoint energy of the moment of creation. It is dangerous substance with the destructive potential of a small nuclear explosion. The antimatter has been placed somewhere in the Vatican City in front of a security camera. Countdown to the time of the explosion begins.

Robert finds himself on a heritage quest to uncover the mysteries of a secret society called the Illuminati. Langdon and Vittoria make their way through the ancient art of Vatican City to track down this antimatter. Langon attempts to retrace the steps of the ‘Path of Illumination’; ancient and elaborate brain games once used as a means of induction into the Illuminati occult. They follow a series of subtle clues and various landmarks in and around Rome.
