Eldest

By Christopher Paolini

eldest

Eldest is the second book in the Inheritance Cycle, written by author Christopher Paolini. These are the continued adventures of Eragon and his celtic Dragon quest. Eragon journeys to the realm of the elves. There he must further his training as a Dragon Rider.

Master of Dark Art, The Evil Kings Quest

In the meantime Roran, Eragon’s cousin has become hunted by the empire. The Ra’zac return to Carvahall, to capture Roran, and take him to the black magic King Galbatorix. Instead they capture Katrina, Roran’s love and wife to be. In his passion and desperation to get his sacred love back, Roran convinces the inhabitants of Carvahall to follow him to safety. They travel to Surda and join the Varden’s fight against the Empire.

The Leadership Philosophy
of Masters of War

King Ajihad is killed. His daughter Nasuada takes the role of leader of the Varden. Eragon swears fealty to her in support of her charismatic leadership. Eragon is also adopted by the king of the dwarves and by accepting the kings request, Eragon has pledged his allegiance to the dwarf king as well. During grooming and training, Eragon makes oaths and promises to the Elves as well.

Earned Value and Personal Values

The main theme that runs through Eldest, is the question of allegiance. In the game of life, when one is in a position of power, that power comes with a level of accountability. The position that Eragon is in, as Dragon Rider, is a position that many people in power seek for their own control.

For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers:
When someone is given incredible privileges it is also required of them to be aware of their accountability, and exercise discernment on how they use their privileges and power.

Once Eragon has claimed his power, how do those around him try to manipulate him to access his power?
To what degree does he demonstrate discernment when dealing with these people?
Do you think that Eragon has an idea of the level of accountability he carries as a result of the power that he wields?
What attitude does he hold that makes him susceptible to manipulations?

How often have you been manipulated into commitments and promises because of similar attitudes?
