equal rites

Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett tells the funny story of Eskarina Smith a young female wizard. Drum Billet, a wizard who knows he’s about to die, travels to a place where an eighth son of an eighth son is about to be born. However, shortly after passing on his wizard’s staff it is discovered that the unique baby gift was passed on to a girl. The mistake is noticed too late and the staff passes on to Eskarina.

Destiny’s Child

Since it is an unspoken rule that girls cannot be wizards, the local witch Granny Weatherwax takes Esk to learn magic as an apprentice witch. It soon becomes apparent that young Esk has uncontrollable alternative power. It seems that she is indeed developing the intuition of a wizard despite Granny’s efforts. Granny then decides to help Eskarina gain the esoteric knowledge and learning of occult magic she requires to become a wizard.

Could it be Magic?

Granny and Esk travel to the Unseen University in Ankh-Morpork for the necessary grooming and training. Along the way Esk meets Simon; a master mind apprentice wizard. Simon has natural talent as a wizard and invents a way of looking at the holographic universe that reduces it to component magic numbers. However, his magic system is so powerful it catches the attention of beings that reside in the Dungeon Dimensions.

For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers:
Aspirations, Inspirations, Wishes, Hopes and Dreams are important elements of a life worth living. If we do not have these things, we become empty shells moving through a world that becomes as unappreciated by us, as we become to ourselves.

So often we lose these important elements because we forget that we had them in the first place. This can often happen when someone steals the magic from our Hopes, Dreams and Wishes. Somewhere along the line they convince us that we cannot do it, that it is not possible, it is just a dream. And then we convince ourselves that we never really wanted it in the first place, we grew up and faced reality.

It is never too late to re-connect with your Aspirations, Inspirations, Wishes, Hopes and Dreams.

No matter how many times Eskarina is told she cannot be a wizard she doesn’t give up. Why?
What is the quality that Esk has, that fuels her resolve?

The quality that Esk demonstrates in Equal Rites is the most important key that will assist you to have the same approach to your Aspirations, Inspirations, Wishes, Hopes and Dreams.
