Eragon

By Christopher Paolini

‘Eragon’ by Christopher Paolini is about a simple farm boy who stumbles across a strange blue stone. Some time after finding the blue stone it hatches. When it hatches, he realizes that the strange blue stone is really a hidden dragon egg. He names her Saphira.

Stone of Adventure

Eragon raises the fire breathing dragon in secret, until two Ra’zac, come looking for the egg. His uncle is mortally wounded and the farm is burned down. He follows the Ra’zac, seeking vengeance. Brom, the village story-teller, insists on helping him and becomes a good mentor to him on his dragon quest. On this adventure quest, the young farm boy, discovers that he is a dragon-rider and Saphira is his dragon.

Dreamweaver Training

On the incredible journey, the newly discovered rider undergoes rigorous physical training and mental training. Brom teaches him sword fighting, magic, the ancient language and the history and ways of the dragon riders. During an ambush Brom is killed. The young dragon rider is saved by a stranger named Murtagh. Shortly after this, he rescues an elf and proceeds on to Farthen Dur, to join the Varden in their battle against King Galbatorix.

For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers:
The main thing that stood out for me in this book is ‘Nothing is what it seems to be.’ Eragon seems to be a lowly farm boy, but it turns out that he has the blood of a Dragon Rider running through his veins. Brom seems to be the town’s old story-teller, but as events unfold, a few snippets about Brom and his origins are revealed.

Take a look at the world around you. Look at the people you spend your time with. Look at the situations you find yourself in. Look at the world you are living in.

How much of each of those things do you truly know beyond a shadow of a doubt? How much of what you think you know, isn’t really what it appears to be?
