Journey to the East
By Herman Hesse

‘Journey to the East’ is a simple life story about the path to freedom. Hesse also shows the many pitfalls that can throw us off the incredible journey towards becoming more of what we are. Glorious spiritual beings having a human experience. The tale unfolds around an intrepid band of seekers. This spiritual adventure quest take them to a mystical place referred to as the “East”. Each member of the group has some desire, the impossible dream that they know will be actualized when they reach the “East.” In other words the heaven quest is completely unique for each of us. Our perceptions of heaven are totally subjective. Not only that, but heaven is right here, right now, manifest live on Earth.
Journey Separate Ways
However, along the night’s journey of dreams something goes amiss. The scrolls of wisdom that are being carried by the porter go missing, as does the porter. The group is thrown into disarray and all give up the quest for the “East” in defeat. So the travelers journey separate ways.
The Longest Journey is the Journey Home
Hesse writes the tale in the first person. He returns to his home town dejected and trapped in mindless self indulgence. He attempts to pick up his old life where he left off. No longer a spiritual traveler, now a normal man, back in the daily grind of Groundhog day. He does not realize that the longest journey is the journey home. Until, some years later Hesse crosses the path of the porter. It is only then that divine inspiration is revealed to him. With this he is initiated into the deeper mysteries of the universe, God / Goddess / All That Is.
