After hitch-hiking randomly across the galaxy, Arthur Dent finds himself on a planet in the middle of a rainstorm. He realises that he is on Earth. Having witnessed it’s destruction, Arthur is surprised to discover that Earth is still around.
A Delusional Witness At Worlds End
A few months later, Arthur hitches a ride with a man named Russell. Russell is driving his sister, Fenchurch, home and explains to Arthur that she is delusional. Apparently she had an epiphany about how to save Earth, and then that she had hallucinations of yellow spaceships. Shortly after this occurrence, the dolphins disappeared.
Accessing the Divine Wisdom of the Dolphins
Arthur can’t help but feel he’s connected to Fenchurch. He decides to contact her. Arthur and Fenchurch develop an love relationship and decide to visit “Wonko the Sane”, a master of science who claims to know the cause of the dolphins’ disappearance. Upon arriving at the scientists’ home, they find that he has a fresh water fish bowl with the message "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish ". A bowl that they all happen to have.
Dolphin Quest
Wonko suggests that there is a creative audio message left behind in the bowl, and encourages them to listen to it. From the message they learn that the dolphins were aware of the destruction of Earth. Before leaving Earth for an alternate lifestyle, the dolphins created a new dimension of wellness on Earth, and transported everyone and everything in it as a way of saving the human species. For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers: Contrary to popular belief. Dolphins are not here for our entertainment. Whales are not here to be hunted by us. They are here for a different purpose. They are here to teach and show us something. They are showing us something about human nature. One of the things they are showing us is by default because of the way we treat them. So Long and Thanks for all the Fish is a good indication of what the Dolphins are actually here for.
