The Clan of the Cave Bear
By Jean M. Auel

The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel, is about a blue-eyed blond-haired girl named Ayla. Ayla is orphaned at the age of 5 by a sudden earthquake that destroys her camp taking the lives of her family. She wanders aimlessly naked and unable to feed herself.
The First of Many Life Changing Experiences
After being attacked and nearly killed by a cave lion Ayla is found by a group of Neanderthal people. They call themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear . They too lost their cave in the earthquake. They make the longest journey faithfully to find a new one. Shortly after finding the child, the clan comes across a beautiful spacious cave, a dream home for the clan. Ayla is then adopted by the medicine soul woman who found her.
It Takes Courage to Change Who You Are
Growing up with these highly sensitive people is not easy. She is clearly different from them, not only in her looks, but also in her creative ideas. Ayla thinks very differently to the neanderthal people, and she struggles to understand their ways. However, she does her best to fit in and conform. As Ayla struggles to conform to her surreal life, she often finds herself on the wrong side of the leader’s son, Broud. For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers: Broud is an egomaniac, who beats on Ayla for being who she is. He feels that she is always stealing his thunder. No matter what he does to be the center of attention, the clan is always talking about Ayla. Because of this, Broud becomes Ayla’s petty tyrant.
In The Fire from Within by Carlos Castaneda, Don Juan teaches Carlos about the Petty Tyrant. Don Juan tells Carlos that there are 5 attributes required to defeat a petty tyrant. In this book Ayla demonstrates these attributes. See if you can identify these attributes and qualities in Ayla? Also do the best you can to understand how, although it may seem that Ayla is defeated, she is actually victorious How can you apply this to your Self and your own life situation? (Remember, one of the quickest ways to grow is by utilizing a petty tyrant)
