The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis, is book three of the Narnia Chronicles. A young boy named Shasta finds out that he is adopted. The fisherman who adopted him is selling him to a powerful Calormene noble. Shasta is happy that he will be leaving the fisherman. However, Bree, his talking horse proposes they run away together and chase freedom, so that they can escape a half life of servitude.

On the incredible journey, Shasta meets Aravis, a young Calormene princess. She has been promised to marry the grand vizier of Tisroc and is fleeing from the forced marriage. The four travel together to the magic kingdom of Narnia. They meet up with the Narnians and Shasta is mistaken for Prince Corin, the prince of Archenland. Shasta goes with them and escapes when prince Corin re-emerges.

Meanwhile, Aravis overhears the grand vizier discussing the invasion of Archenland. Aravis rejoins Shasta and they escape. They make an unpleasant journey, faithfully across the desert, while being pursued by a lion. The frightened travelers outrun the army approaching Archenland, allowing Shasta to meet the King in time to warn him. Shasta is recognized by the King. He is the long-lost elder twin of Prince Corin. Being the elder twin, Shasta is the rightful heir of the throne.
