Harry Potter
and the Order of the Phoenix

By J.K. Rowling

‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ by J.K. Rowling is the fifth book in the Harry Potter series. This book begins with Harry and his cousin Dudley being attacked by Dementors. Harry uses magic spells to fight them off and is sent for a disciplinary hearing at the Ministry of Magic.

The Highly Sensitive People in the Ministry

Professor Dumbledore re-forms the Order of the Phoenix when he learns from Harry, at the end of book four, that Lord Voldemort has returned. Despite Harry’s insistance that he is telling the truth about the Dark Magic Wizard’s return, the Ministry of Magic refuses to believe him. Harry’s personal values are call into question and he is make out to be a child making up horror stories.

Mind Control of the Masses

In an attempt to undermine the credibility of both Professor Dumbledore and Harry, the Ministry releases it’s own version the truth. The Ministry goes so far as to appoint Dolores Umbridge, one of their own subordinates, so as to take control of how the school and how the children learn magic. Dolores Umbridge goes on to completely dominate Hogwarts School of Magic.

For the Tropic of Freedom Finders Keepers:
There were two things in this book that really stood out for me. The first was how fear can drive us to lose all common sense. We find ourselves doing things we never thought ourselves capable of. It can show sides of us that we never knew existed. Sometimes, this can be a good thing, like in the case of Harry. Sometimes, this can be a bad thing, like in the case of Cornelius Fudge.

Look at a situation, where you found yourself losing all common sense because you were so driven by your fear. What happened?

Remember, fear is a trick of the ego. It can drive all common sense out of you.

The second was how, the Ministry of Magic controlled the information that was being sent out to the public. I found this particularly interesting, because it made me wonder:

How much is going on in this world that we are not fully aware of?
