The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

By Douglas Adams

‘The Restaurant at the End of the Universe’; is Douglas Adam’s second book in the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy comedy science fiction series. In this book we begin where the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy ended. Arthur Dent and Co. have just left the planet Magrathea and are attacked by Vogons.

Fun and Games for Zaphod

Zaphod and Marvin vanish and reappear on Ursa Minor Beta, at the offices of the Guide. Zaphod is sent through a torture chamber device called the Total Perspective Vortex. However, Zaphod survives and escapes. Zaphod is reunited with Arthur, Ford Prefect and Trillian. They are then transported to Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

The Earth Science of Ancient History

The Space shuttle then crash-lands on prehistoric Earth. They realise that the Neanderthals, even though the original inhabitants of the planet, are not the real ancestors of modern humans.

For the Tropic of Freedom Finders Keepers:
My favourite part in this book was the Total Perspective Vortex. This is a torture tool that annihilates you by showing you just how infinitesimally small you are compared to the Universe.

Look at everything from the way Arthur Dent sees things. He sees the world from the perspective of an ant. Then change perspectives, look at everything from the way Zaphod Beeblebrox sees things, especially himself. It’s the only reason why he survives the Total Perspective Vortex.

How different would the universe look to you if you saw it from alternative perspectives?
How small do you imagine yourself to be in this vast, massive universe?
How much value do you feel you have in your own universe?
