The Sentimental Agents
of the Volyen Empire

By Doris Lessing

The Sentimental Agents of the Volyen Empire by Doris Lessing is the final book in the Canopus Archives. Written as a series of essays and letters to leaders, Klorathy, a senior Colonial administrator, recounts his illuminating experiences in the Volyen Empire. The Volyen Empire is a relatively weak interstellar empire that comprises of the planet Volyen, its 2 moons, Voyenadna and Volyendesta and 2 neighbouring planets, Maken and Slovin.

Cultural Influences on Emotional Expression

Although this system is at the edge of Canopus’s sphere of influence of perception, agents are sent to the regions of the worlds of the Volyen Empire, because Volyen’s colonization of its 2 neighbouring planets have provoked the Sirian Empire. In addition, Shammat, Canopus’s public enemy; has begun to establish a presence in the region. Under Shammat’s increasing interpersonal influence, the disillusioned and oppressed citizens of Volyen start voicing their thoughts on the government. Revolutionary war leaders form groups to counter the Empire’s rhetoric.

The Emotional Influence of Obsessive Quests

Klorathy is sent to observe the Volyen world current events. Incent, one of his agents, has fallen prey to Shammat’s increasing interpersonal influence and finds himself caught up in the sentiment of the revolutionary rhetoric. He is withdrawn from the field by Klorathy and placed in a hospital for Rhetorical Diseases.

For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers:
This entire book is about the influence and power of words. Words are the property of sorcerers; and sorcerers understand that how a word, or a phrase of words, is used has an impact on their reality and lesser minds.

The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne elaborates on this exact principle. How we use words and the intention behind them has an impact on how we think, who we allow ourselves to become and what we manifest in our reality.

How is the power of words demonstrated in this book?
What is the intention behind the words that Shammat, Canopus and Sirius use?
How do each of these ways of using words impact on the Volyen Empire?
What does this entire book demonstrate to you, about how words have an influence on you within your world?

For the final question – look at how you are influenced through everything: advertising, tv, religion, politics, friendship, love, work, money, etc. Look at everything in your life and become aware of how words are used and on how these words have an on influence you.
