By C.S. Lewis

The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis, is book six of the Narnia Chronicles. The Story begins when Eustace Scrubb and classmate Jill Pole are trying to escape a gang of bullies. They ask for Aslan’s help and blunder through a garden gate that leads them into Alsan’s country. Eustace falls over the edge of a cliff trying to prevent Jill from going over. Aslan appears and saves Eustace by blowing him into the magic kingdom of Narnia.
Signs of Guidance on the Incredible Journey
Aslan charges Jill with helping Eustace find Prince Rilian. He is the prince of Narnia who disappeared a few years before. Aslan gives Jill four motivational signs to guide her and Eustace on their mystic quest. Once there, they are aided by a parliament of talking owls. They tell the children, that Prince Rilian disappeared and is under the magic spells of an enchantress.
Amazing Adventures on a Mystic Quest
The children go on the longest journey to rescue Prince Rilian. They find themselves in many precarious situations, and by following the motivational signs provided, the children are guided along safely. They soon meet the Lady of Green Kirtle and a young man being raised by her. They are told that the young man has nightly psychotic episodes. When this happens, he is tied to a silverchair to prevent him from harming anyone.
The Mind Control Techniques of an Enchantress
The children are curious and decide to watch the young man during the night. As the children witness the young man in the Silver Chair they recognise the fourth sign. Taking guidance from the sign, they release the youth from the silver chair. Instead of hurting them, the young man reveals himself as the vanished Prince Rilian. They return to Narnia with Prince Rilian and are rewarded by Aslan for their courage under fire. For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers: The signs referenced in this book made me think of the nature of intuition. Intuition is our most important guide and it is something you find within you. It is part of you. To activate intuition you have to take the action. To activate it you have to ask the right questions and paying attention manifestations of the spirit.
What is it that Aslan makes possible for the children by sending them to save the Prince? How is this related to asking the right questions and paying attention to the manifestations of the spirit? How is this whole book related to dealing with petty tyrants?
What is your relationship with your Self? Are you able to spend time alone without needing to distract yourself or keep busy? Do you make the time to sit quietly and just Be? To the last question, it’s not about whether you have time. As the Merovingian says in the Matrix: “If you never make time, then how can you ever have time.”
