Way Of The Peaceful Warrior
By Dan Millman

Way of the Peaceful Warrior written by Dan Millman is an autobiographical account about discovering the freedom trail of the warrior soul. It starts out when Dan is at University. He spends his time practising gymnastics, chasing meaningless affairs and dreaming of going to the Olympics.
The Freedom Call
Dan begins to hear the chimes of freedom in the form of a growing restlessness. He attempts to compensate for this restlessness by going for a jog in the middle of the night. At a service station, he meets an old man, who with time, he comes to nickname ‘Socrates’. Dan finds himself unsettled by Socrates’ extraordinary speed and agility and seeks to learn the secret of it. As a result of this Socrates becomes Dan’s “shaman guide”.
Mastering the Zone in This Magic Moment
Soc begins teaching Dan the Way of the Peaceful Warrior by giving him a series of tasks and lessons. Throughout the period of teaching, Socrates maintains 2 things:
1) Live completely and entirely in the present moment. 2) There is never nothing going on.
Dan gradually begins to understand his good mentor, and learns to appreciate this magic moment. He starts to gain mastery of himself and realises that the incredible journey is more important than the destination.
Personal Core Values of the Peaceful Warrior
Dan also discovers that to be of service is the most empowering action. As Socrates says to Dan: The difference between knowledge and wisdom is, you can know as much as you want, but it means nothing until you do something with that knowledge. For the Tropic of Freedom Books Finders Keepers: What are the 3 laws of a warrior that Dan learns? What does Dan have to let go of, to truly understand the journey of the peaceful warrior?
What are you doing with your knowledge? Do you spend your time focusing on how much you know or are you applying it in the best way possible? - To be of service to others! How does Dan learn to be of service to others?
Explanation of the difference between Being of Service and Being Serviceable/Servile: To Be of Service takes caring and comes from the heart. There is no agenda. The purpose behind being of service to others is about offering your value and opening up possibilities. If you are being of service no one can use you, you are choosing to offer your value. Being Serviceable/ Servile carries behind it the energy of sacrifice and the attitude of taking care of. It makes you disposable and useful to those who are using you for their own purposes.
